We provide a term, spot and futures trading of all energy-related products, including crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas, LNG and electricity, as well as energy price risk management and hedging services through financial markets. In Japan, one of the world's leading energy markets, bp works with trading teams around the world to provide proposals that meet our clients' needs.
LNG (liquid natural gas)
bp’s LNG portfolio consists of various LNG contracts, including mid- to long-term, short-term and spot contracts, in addition to long-term LNG projects in which we participate around the world. We have developed a consistent value chain that includes upstream gas production, pipeline gas, LNG ship transportation, LNG import terminals, sales and even gas power generation. Even in a dynamic market environment, we are constantly providing innovative solutions in terms of price indexes, contract terms, trading and price risk management using financial techniques to meet our customers' needs. In developing these businesses, we respect and value our long-term partnerships with electric power and gas companies and national oil and gas companies in Japan and around the world.
Oil
bp has deep expertise, experience and a proven track record in oil trading. We bring together outstanding traders, analysts and local expertise to develop trading that responds to dynamic market changes based on global knowledge. In addition to supplies from oil fields and refineries owned by the bp group around the world, we can trade all major crude oils and petroleum products according to our customers' requests by procuring from other crude oil producers and suppliers or refineries through our trading team's global network. Our Japan office works with bp group's trading bases in Singapore and other areas to support the creation of a stable and efficient supply chain for crude oil, petroleum products, LPG and petrochemical products, mainly in the Asian region. We are exploring new business possibilities every day while building strong partnerships with customers in Japan.
Marine fuel
Marine fuels is a large-scale global business. bp is one of the world's leading suppliers, with a global network of strategic ports, providing unrivalled service and consistently high-quality fuel. Our Japan office provides marine fuel supply and hedging services tailored to the needs of our clients based in Japan and Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Power trading – BP Energy Japan
BP Energy Japan KK (BPEJ), whose ultimate company is bp p.l.c., is an electricity retailer in Japan. BPEJ’s core strategy is to provide solutions to customers in Japan by integrating the electricity value chain. BPEJ is part of bp’s Supply, trading & shipping division, providing a broad platform that bp leverages to meet the energy needs of its customers around the world. bp’s electricity markets and origination team combines global expertise with deep market knowledge to manage the supply and demand balance across bp’s growing portfolio.

Gas & low carbon energy
Working with Japanese customers and partners on gas/LNG and integrated low carbon solutions bringing international energy expertise and technical capability to contribute to energy security and renewables developments in and outside of Japan. We established offshore wind power development team in 2022 and were awarded as a developer of the Yamagata-Yuza project in 2024 together with Marubeni-led JV consortium. We are promoting with partners on CCS cross-border value chain development from Japan to Indonesia where bp is an operator of Tangguh LNG Project which has huge CCS/CCUS potential.

We operate in various fields: petrochemical products; trading of crude oil; petroleum products; and gas, marine, industrial and automotive lubricants, electricity trading, solar and offshore wind. We aim to grow through partnerships with Japanese companies.
We contribute to Japanese society by supplying the energy essential to everyone’s lives and by promoting low carbonization.

History of bp in Japan
Our history
Today – BP Japan K.K. is a company registered in Japan and wholly owned by bp p.l.c., while bp Castrol K.K. is a listed company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and in the bp group. Its core business is the import, manufacture, and sale of automotive lubricants.
2024 – bp and the consortium with Marubeni, Kansai Electric, Tokyo Gas and Marutaka was awarded as the developer/Operator of Yamagata Yuza offshore wind project (450MW) at Round 3 auction.
2023 – bp entered into the electricity market in Japan and bp Energy Japan K.K. (BPEJ), new entity for the business received an approval from the country’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as a registered electricity retailer.
2021 – bp sold its global petrochemicals business to INEOS. As part of that deal, BP Japan’s petrochemicals activities were transferred to INEOS Acetyls Japan K.K.
2014-2015 – BP Japan transferred its Crude and LPG trading activities to BP Singapore Pte. Limited.
2010 – BPJT transferred its Crude and LPG trading activities to BP Japan.
2005 – January: Following the above company split in October 2004, Petrolub International K.K. and BP Japan Lubricants Co., Ltd. merged, with Petrolub as the surviving company, to integrate their automotive lubricant businesses.
The company name was changed to BP Castrol Ltd.
2004 – October: In preparation for bp’s integration of its automotive lubricants businesses in Japan, BP Japan K.K. is split into (a) its automotive lubricants business and (b) its other businesses, and (b) is separated.
The name of (a) was changed to BP Japan Lubricants Co., Ltd., and the name of the receiving company of (b) was changed to its former name, BP Japan Co., Ltd., and it took over all businesses except the automotive lubricants business.
2001 – May: UK headquarters name changed to BP plc.
2000 – April: Acquires Atlantic Richfield (ARCO).
– July: Castrol is acquired.
– July: New unified brand "BP" announced.
1999 – January: Merger with Amoco completed. UK headquarters name becomes BP Amoco. World's third largest oil company group is born.
1993 – BP Chemicals K.K. changes its name to BP Japan Co., Ltd. and takes over the business of BP Far East Limited. As a result, BP Far East Limited is closed.
1991 – BP Chemicals K.K. is newly established to sell chemical products in Japan.
1987 – The UK government sells its 31.5% stake in bp.
Complete privatization achieved.
Listed on the Foreign Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
1984 – BP Japan Trading begins operations.
Acquires 20% of Petrolub International's shares (current stake is 33.78%).
1979 – bp Exploration, bp Chemicals and bp Finance join the Tokyo office.
1964 – bp Marine begins operations in Japan.
1960 –bp subsidiary BP Far East Limited opens a representative office in Tokyo.
1954 – The company is renamed The British Petroleum Company Limited.
1935 – The company was renamed the Anglais Oil Company.
1909 – Founded in the UK as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company Limited (APOC).
