In addition to its gas value chain alliance with Reliance Industries Ltd., bp’s activities include Castrol lubricants; oil and gas trading; clean energy projects through its investment in Lightsource bp; IT and procurement back office activities; staffing and training for bp’s global marine fleet; and the recruitment of skilled Indian employees for its global businesses. bp’s recent retail joint venture with RIL, ‘Jio bp’ signals a paradigm shift in fuels marketing and mobility solutions. It will incorporate and build on RIL’s current fuel retailing network of 1,400 sites and 30 aviation fuel stations across India to up to 5,500 retail sites and 45 aviation fuel stations over the next five years. Castrol lubricants will also be available across the venture’s network.

The power of collaboration

bp voluntarily partners on initiatives like the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), a $1 billion fund for research and technology that brings together many of the world's leading energy industry majors. The focus is on collaborative actions that address climate change, including the reducing of methane emissions and the advancing of carbon capture use and storage (CCUS).

bp and partners: key developments and strategic initiatives in India

Establishment of global business services centre in Pune

In June 2020, bp announced plans for a new global business services (GBS) centre in Pune, India, to support its worldwide operations. The centre, which began operations in September 2021, provides business processing, analytics, and data science capabilities, and will employ up to 2,000 people when fully staffed. By internalizing processes and focusing on digital and automation, bp’s Pune centre aims to transform business functions, improve customer experience, and strengthen bp’s presence in India while supporting global low carbon growth.

Investment in green infrastructure: Eversource Capital

In April 2018, Lightsource bp and Everstone Group announced the formation of Eversource Capital, a new investment platform focused on green infrastructure opportunities in India. This partnership combines expertise in renewable energy and infrastructure development, supporting the advancement of sustainable energy and low carbon solutions in a strategically important market for bp.

Deepwater gas condensate discovery in Cauvery basin

On August 23, 2013, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and bp announced a major deepwater gas condensate discovery, D-56, in the Cauvery basin off India’s east coast. This was the second gas find in the CY-DWN-2001/2 (CYD5) block, located about 62km offshore in 1,743m of water. Testing confirmed strong flow rates. RIL holds a 70% interest and bp 30%. The discovery was reported to Indian authorities.

Collaboration on acetic acid plant

On the same day, Indian Oil Corporation and bp signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore developing an acetic acid plant producing up to 1 million tonnes per year. This agreement strengthened their partnership and expanded bp’s presence in India's chemicals sector.

bp and Reliance Industries partnership

In 2011, bp and Reliance Industries Limited launched a major partnership in India’s gas sector, with bp acquiring a 30% stake in several oil and gas contracts. Together, they formed India Gas Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a 50:50 joint venture to source, market, and transport natural gas. This alliance, one of India's largest foreign direct investments, focused on boosting domestic production, starting with the KG-D6 block and expanding to support India’s growing energy needs.
